How to Fix a Loose Downpipe

Downpipe brackets can become loose, which can cause joints to fracture resulting in water running down the wall and causing dampness in the building. This simple task can be completed when these steps are taken.

Step 1

Using a spirit level make sure the downpipe is perfectly vertical.

Reposition Loose Bracket & Mark Position

Reposition Loose Bracket & Mark Position

Reposition the downpipe bracket that is loose either a little above or below its previous position. Hold the bracket in its new position against the wall and mark the wall with pencil exactly where each screw will be required.

Step 3

Drill Marked Positions

Drill Marked Positions

Using a power drill fitted with a masonry drill bit, drill each of the newly marked positions to a sufficient depth for the new screws (about 110% of the length of the wall plug).

Step 4

Insert Wall Plugs

Insert Wall Plugs

Insert appropriately sized wall plugs into the drilled holes and use a hammer to tap the plugs into place.

Step 5

Fix Bracket in Place

Fix Bracket in Place

Secure the bracket in place with appropriately sized screws and the screwdriver. Make sure each screw is screwed in firmly to prevent the bracket from becoming loose again in the near future.
